“Typhoon Meranti caused extensive damage to the power grid of city of Xiamen,” Xu Zhiyong - Vice-president of State Grid Xiamen Power Supply said, “Six 220kV substations, twenty-one 220kV lines, forty-five 110kV substations, fifty-two 110kV lines, ten thousands of distribution transformers or so and seven hundreds of 10kV Lines were out of service and up to 552,200 households lost power.”
Thousands of workers from Fujian have been dispatched to repair three 220-KV power supply towers blown down by the winds, according to the city government. Xiamen Power Supply said repair efforts were difficult due to fallen trees and disrupted traffic.
The State Grid Fujian Electric Power Supply Company also assembled a large number of people and things from the whole province. 26 sets of power generation vehicles with 4500 rescuers and a large quantities of emergency aids poured into the city of Xiamen by September 16. To date, the power supply has resumed for 1.6 million households.
The water supply system was also subject to severe damage. According to Zhang Liyong, general manager of Xiamen Water Group, all water plants stopped supplying the water at 1:50 am September 15. At the time being, water services are now back to normal in some districts through emergency repairs, including Haicang and Jimei. However, there are still 2.72 million households in other four districts which are cut off from the water supply.
Typhoon Meranti made landfall in Xiang'an district of Xiamen City, East China's Fujian province, at 3:05 a.m. Thursday, with gales up to 48 meters per second.
The world's strongest typhoon so far this year has also been monitored as the strongest one hitting southern Fujian Province since the local meteorological records were kept in 1949.
